1% Faster Than Flow

First to go
First in line
First to the idea
First to raise your hand
First to get the new iPhone

To be first implies speed beyond our control. In this frantic gear, speed disperses our attention, clouds our vision, and raids our source.

*Frantic in pursuit of first* is often executed poorly. Timing at this pace becomes excruciatingly difficult. The likelihood of mistakes rains down on you.

Then comes the frustration. It pushes us down into a deeper level of stuck.

1% Faster Than Flow

Fortunately, speed comes in a range of frequencies, many of which serve us better than frantic and with much less pain.

Life, like a river, has its own unique flow. It’s always in motion. Although we sometimes feel stuck, we are only stuck when we choose to float indecisively at the rate of flow around us. And at the rate of other floaters around us.

When we add the tiniest bit of speed with smooth and purposeful forward strokes — equivalent to a walking pace — we gain just enough forward speed to regain our attention. And just as valuable? This 1% faster than flow is slow enough to hear speed’s voice.

1% faster than flow isn’t hard to maintain — it takes one deliberate forward stroke after another.

1% faster than flow gives us freedom to choose to:

Accelerate
Slow down
Correct mistakes
Change directions
Move again tomorrow

1% faster than flow is not a commitment to go-fast. It’s a commitment to not-stop.

With gratitude,

Joe
