A Timely Bet

Ponts, Catalunya, May 22, 2020

Along our journeys, we place some important bets. About our work. About our health. About our relationships. About where we live. About how we live.

Last week in Sunday Morning Joe, I shared the context of my father’s bet on Huntsville. (Sharing this also led to hundreds of beautiful and kind responses — thank you for each and everyone one of them.)

Such wagers help us to arrange our lives as close as possible to the confluence of our talents, what matters most to us, and what we believe could better serve the world.

Even at a challenging and minimal level of progress that we sometimes encounter in life, choosing to survive for another day reinforces a belief about the benefit of a single and small step closer to this confluence.

Sometimes, an event beyond our control emerges that compels us to re-evaluate our wagers… and perhaps make some new ones.

If now feels like such a time, perhaps the start line is an improved condition for placing the next bet.

It is not too late — for anyone — to create a better decision-making environment that builds from a place of calm, purpose, and letting go.

It simply requires a new first bet…

On yourself.

With gratitude, Joe
