From t-shirts and hats to valuable space in our brains, the call to “Hustle” surrounds us. It’s the new “Get ahead!” which translates to “Keep up.”

More than a gentle suggestion to work harder, “Hustle” is increasingly seen as a way of life for entrepreneurs, athletes, and artists. It rides the trend as the new competitive edge in the pursuit of winning.

A little more effort never hurts, right?

As this word deepens its position in our lexicon, the first image that comes to my mind is baseball legend, Pete Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle.” As a player, Rose was known for his hard-charging, aggressive, and gritty approach to the sport.

What is overlooked in Rose’s athletic prowess is context to the game he played. A baseball game moves at a slow pace with continuous breaks in the action where most of the strategic choices are made. Rose’s style of “Hustle” was not continuous. Hustle happened between breaks.

To work harder at the right time and for the right reason is a desirable skill. But, to work harder as a way of life is a hard way to live.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Anti-Hustle disperses just the right amount of creative and strategic effort that aligns with life’s peak moments and priorities.

Anti-Hustle exists on a foundation of rest, recovery, and letting go. Here, these are the small wins.

Anti-Hustle does not skip going the extra mile or reject grit. It simply slows down your pace to better consider the options and guide your focus.

Not with a noisy external voice that constantly interrupts and demands “Do more,” but with your own voice that pleads “Do less.”

With gratitude,

-Joe
