I’ve been through the Olympic Games experience as an athlete (twice,) a commentator for NBC, CEO of a U.S. National Governing Body, and as a spectator. You don’t have to look far on Google to see that I’m proud of my Olympic affiliations.

But, these issues are facing the Olympic movement are very real. Poor planning, unrealistic organizational standards, technological advancements in human performance, and a tone-deaf approach towards consumer change damage the original intent and spirit of the Games.

On that last point, there are competitors building incredible platforms for human performance that appear to be far more approachable and charming than what the Olympic movement offers right now. Everything Red Bull does is a great example of this.

Perhaps worst of all, leadership of any Olympic organization rarely likes to be told how to do improve or change. That’s why my life pursuits move in a near opposite direction these days. But, I hope the leaders who are motivated to create the change needed, will find their way. I am cheering for them.
