Let Go Of The Objective
Pick the issue. Any issue. They’re all important. And yet, the more we desire to see these issues progress into the better, the more stuck in the status quo they appear.
True change requires concentrated attention.
Then, it requires using that attention to win even more attention.
The thing is, attention never has been in higher demand and in so limited supply. It feels like everyone wants to change something, and all these varied efforts cancel each other out.
The beat of the next issue’s rally drum will interrupt at any moment, and you and your particular issue will watch as the parade marches away.
Can anything ever be done?
Why go to the trouble to work for change?
What’s the Return On Investment (ROI) for the effort you put forth?
The most critical element of the change is the fact that you make steps to do so.
Your pursuit of change changes:
How you talk.
How you listen.
How you believe.
How you remember what truly matters.
How you let go of what no longer matters.
This kind of change is the sum of:
Persistence + Patience + LGOTO
Persistence: In the world of small steps forward every day, learn to DO and LOVE the “every day” part. One small action performed daily. No cheat days. No days off. Don’t break the chain.
Patience: Change may demand attention right now but it’s asking you to play the long game. Do the work with a realization that it takes time. And… you have that time.
LGOTO: Let Go Of The Objective. The most counterintuitive part of change is to let go of the outcome. To focus on what you don’t have yet de-powers the skills and talents needed to make change come about.
When practiced deliberately, change happens:
With better health… With more respect… and always…
With gratitude,
-Joe
