More Simple

“If you had a year off (with pay), what would you do?”

This type of question is not my favorite, but a friend posted it on Facebook and the follow up answers catch my attention.

A common theme emerges as more people quickly weigh in with what their idea of such a year looks like. Of all the replies to his post, “Travel” is the most popular. But travel does not require a year away from work.

The sentiment which weaves through their various ideas is that something complicated needs to happen to create this kind of change in their lives.

As the comments begin to wane, I feel the emergence of an even bigger gap which separates these people from the change they would like to realize in their lives. My friend’s post was merely a temporary escape from each person’s current reality.

The worst part for me? It is the knowledge that they are one excruciatingly close, simple action away from change and yet there is not one hint of their intention to start.

Why is it so difficult to make our actions More Simple?

All of us have a space around us. We built this space. It contains our choices, behaviors, and relationships.

What we allow into our space determines how the gap from here to there is managed.

What we allow into our space determines whether our actions go from More Simple to complicated.

Make no mistake, there are structures outside of our space which raise their game every day with the aim of adding complications.

Every motivational talk which preaches to us to think BIGGER.
Every message that stalks us with unfiltered information.
Every app that claims it will make our lives easier.
Every metric that compares our life to others.

Our space, continually, is under external assault by lots of *every.*

Every adds up.
Every weighs a lot.
Every disrupts our More Simple.

Our space expects from us to courageously say “NO” to every.

Our intention to start depends upon More Simple.

With gratitude,

-Joe
