Small Boats, Open Water

We begin in small boats. We see only open water. It is not easy to decide where to go. But, we pull the paddle through the water and our boat moves. Perhaps not far nor fast, but movement propelled by our own effort feels pure.

Slowly, our course takes a direction. We accumulate information, which over time, becomes experience.

Such experience often brings about change to our craft. We opt for increased speed, size, and accessories. After all, these attributes and additions align with the experience trajectory that we notice of others.

As the years pass, something else changes. We notice that our bigger boat travels through a body of water that appears to narrow. We start to wonder if we could even turn around the ship if we so chose.

On this path, simplicity occasionally surfaces to ask, “Does this have to be so complicated?”

Earlier in our journey, simplicity was the compass.

What happened to this compass? And, can we get it back?

Of course we can.

The only question that we must answer is how effectively can we quiet the outside noise?

When this becomes the practice through our small steps forward every day, our own voice strengthens. Open water appears. And a small boat in which to begin again.

With gratitude,

-Joe
