Starting At Phase Zero
When Spain started to loosen its restrictive quarantine rules about a week ago, the government’s plan was unveiled as a gradual process.
As someone who maps out any kind of improvement through the words, “small steps forward every day,” such a process does not come as a surprise.
What catches my attention to Spain’s four-step plan though is the name of its first step — Phase Zero.
Today, all of us in this country are conducting and living through our “Phase Zero” experiment. It consists of real actions in health, movement, connection, and work.
Phase Zero is the smallest set of first steps… a collective version of “let’s see what works.”
Previously, I long believed in the idea of “Zero to One” as the critical first step to a meaningful and purposeful trajectory. In such a scenario, “Zero” was the inaction. It represented what was not working.
But when Zero becomes the landing spot of a first step of action, what precedes Zero?
Confinement.
However such confinement happens, freedom is reduced or eliminated until…
Self-awareness kicks in.
Then, a choice emerges.
The ability to choose is the impetus of the first step out of confinement…
