Stepping Aside Versus Stepping Away
Step aside or step away? The words we choose highlight an important difference.
To step aside implies we are merely getting out of the way. We concede that the situation in which we want to extract ourselves is more important. Not only is it calling the shots but we’re responding to its orders and the people who manufacture them.
Aside is not an action. It’s a posture of yielding.
To step away places our importance above the situation at hand. Away is not only a path but a direction. Here, we exercise our courage, creativity, and capacity to choose. Our action simply adds momentum on top of momentum.
In a step away, we are accountable to ourselves, not to them.
The situation in question might be taking a heavy toll and compromising your most essential values. A change is clearly needed.
A good change starts with a clear transition.
A clear transition cannot see a step aside but it recognizes a step away. Even just a small step towards a way forward.
With gratitude,
Joe
