The Only System That Matters
“What do you do?” Or, the closely related, “What do you want to do?”
I don’t practice the answer to these questions which are commonly posed by an airline seat-mate or a fellow guest at a party. When I am asked, I attempt to notice what I say when I say it. Then, I try to notice whether the questioner is confused… or not confused.
It should not be so difficult for me to simply say “I help people and organizations perform their best.”
In my profession, this sounds very similar to what many claim that they do. I know, because I pay attention to others in my industry. I read the mass emails they send out and I review their cookie cutter website landing pages.
What do I find? Lots of industry-speak that attempts to convert what is challenging in life and business into a situation that is easy to fix — usually with a paid monthly subscription or downloadable purchase. They offer:
The 3-step process to unlock your powers of persuasion,
The 5 principles of successful people,
Polished pie charts with each slice representing a part of your life you need to improve.
The jump from here to there is not that easy
I appreciate the value of systems and processes. I rely on my own. I just don’t think you should stake everything on mine. And especially not on the click-through steps, fancy videos, or tricked out slide-decks of others.
If I’ve learned anything about the ideas I write in this space every Sunday morning (for more than three and half years), it is this:
It is not easy to take on life’s challenges. It is scary to make a jump when opportunities appear that are not in your plan.
My purpose in this space IS to consistently share with you a noise-quieting, irrelevance-stripping, slow moving and step-by-small step process that has served me deeply and purposely.
Then, make it your own. Vigorously borrow, rent, steal, test, and/or question it. Make it better. Shape it for yourself by you. Make it yours. No permission needed. No purchase necessary.
Simply start.
With gratitude,
Joe
