The Red Pill

There’s a certain feeling I get when I step out. Or away. In a completely different direction from what others perceive as normal.

The step out the door on the final day of my job.

The step that shapes a business idea into a defined action.

The step away from home ownership… and the step into residing in a new country.

Or, the every day step to get out of bed and begin a morning practice of self-investment.

All of us know this vibrant feel-good moment which slaloms itself through the ocean buoys of consideration, choice, and “let’s do this.”

It’s here that we change our energy from “say” into “know” and finally into “do.”

The excitement of “This just might work” quickly replaces the fear of uncertainty.

And who doesn’t want more of this kind of excitement?

Who doesn’t want to share with more people the feeling of the wind in your face?

Who doesn’t want to get to that next horizon-line even faster?

Who doesn’t want to pick the red pill?

Then, one day, *more and faster* catch up. I realize I’m not the only one who consumed the red pill.

The red pill?

Yes, the red pill that Neo chose. Remember the protagonist from the sci-fi thriller, “The Matrix,” who had to decide between one of two futures? The red pill represents freedom and uncertainty, and the blue pill ensures safety and the status quo.

The spirit of the red pill is presented to us in that narrow zone between deciding and doing.

Today, everyone appears to choose red.

Many people don’t just choose the red pill — they become red pill experts and influencers. They regurgitate clever stories about how Oprah, Gates, and Buffet utilize the red pill to grow giant fortunes and live happy lives.

After reading the umpteenth post entitled something like, “3 Secrets You Didn’t Know About The Red Pill,” I realize the red pill isn’t so red any more. What once felt special is now average. Art has become commoditized. The wind no longer billows the sails.

Now what?

This is the call to reinvent. To push away from the comforts of “we’re all on deck together.”

Reinvention is not a team endeavor. It starts with a personal choice to work the narrow zone between deciding and doing. Reinvention emerges through activating small steps forward every day.

Here, the pills are not a color, nor are they a solution. In fact, there is no pill at all. Just a personal process you select that honors an uncertain freedom beyond a distant horizon line.

Your turn to step. Away. From what others perceive as normal.

With gratitude,

Joe
