The Value Of Being Heard

Most everyone has something to say. They prepare an idea, perspective, response, or declaration to be heard by the masses. The more the better?

This premise of *more* drives the construction and refinement of technological infrastructures that urge people to:

Reach a larger audience.
Increase influence.
Get into the big game.

The “Share Now” button is pressed. The “Box” is checked.

Just as I sat down at my writing table to type this post — a popular social media platform emailed to me the following:

“You are gaining followers. Congratulations! Use hashtags and Tweet about trending topics, and you will find an even larger audience!”

This amused me because my primary tool that I would use to build a larger audience and talk about trending topics — my iPhone — this week spent some time at the bottom of the icy Segre River.

It was out-of-commission for a few days.

Yet, despite its infirmary in a bag of rice, I apparently gained followers.

#WhatsTheFrequencyKenneth?

My unplanned digital detox and time away from my phone reinforced two important beliefs about this kind communication:

  1. The chase of a larger audience is a terrible method for being heard.
  2. To interact with trending topics is precious time not directed to what actually matters.

One is rarely heard by using such channels to disperse their finely crafted message. Most ideas, perspectives, responses, and declarations bump and swirl through the funnel of amplified noise then quickly decrease volume as they reverberate down a hall of decreasing echoes.

#NoThankYou

There is a lesser-used channel that waits for you to return. It fosters words and messages that need to be heard. It has an easily accessed and clear transmission.

You simply connect your truth to your willingness to take action.

Say it — Do it.

No other audience is relevant.
No static chatter interferes from other frequencies.
No amplification is needed… other than you.

What gets expressed is clearly heard by the one person who is already there to listen.

In this channel, you are both the sender and the receiver.

#CanYouHearMeNow?

-Joe
