Will It Stick?
We start (and restart) a positive step forward with the intention that it will stay with us. How can we be sure it will?
We won’t. We never will. All we can do is begin.
I started a project again this past week. Something important. Something that matters… at least to me. One day, I hope it will be of value to others.
I’m the solitary traveler on this path. The bandwidth of accountability is quite narrow. I didn’t think I had the time to commit. I didn’t think I had the attention to focus. If it didn’t work, I thought that nobody would notice.
But I would notice. And for the past several months of put-off, I did notice.
So, I simply put the project in front of me and started. Again.
Methodically and every day, a few minutes typically turns into an hour, perhaps more. What matters is the first few minutes. What matters is showing up to start.
I remain a little haunted by the question, “What if I stop?” And perhaps, “What if I don’t do this well?” Both are possibilities. Both keep me a little restless.
Each day that I simply start deepens the likelihood that I will continue. The goal is not for the habit to become easier. The goal is to repeat the habit.
With gratitude,
Joe
