You Are Not A Brand

In a world where everything is open to comparison, it’s never been easier to believe that what we have isn’t enough, or what we are doing is not on track.

Doubt creeps in.

“Shouldn’t I be focused while meditating?”
“Why isn’t my website getting more traffic?”
“How can I close more sales?”
“How do I get there faster?”

We struggle to keep our ideas, style, and methodology relevant. Our belief system is challenged to remain centered.

I’ve faced these dilemmas in my own life, with two distinctively different choices:

Rebrand: The New Me

When I was a canoeing athlete, I tried to forget about what wasn’t working in my racing and training by using my version of a “fresh coat of paint.” I’d invent a new campaign slogan or later, a new boat color.

The feeling was practically addictive. The anticipation. The overnight change. The reaction. But, I didn’t address the issues that held me back.

Rebranding = day-trading with a currency of hope.

Refine: The Daily Practice

Now, and in this period of my life, I embrace every day as an opportunity to create a better version of myself. I make daily micro-adjustments and updates that help evolve me with an evolving world.

To refine daily is methodical. But, like a savings account, my self-investment in this area receives daily compounded interest, and my currency of experimentation leads to growth.

I run lots of small experiments in the spirit of improvement. Experiments so small that others would not even notice unless I told them what I was testing.

I experiment with my sleeping routines, mindfulness, movement, and creativity.

Slowly, my daily experiments in refinement strengthen my belief system in being grateful for what I have and for what I can still learn.

Small step by small step, one more day spent refining is one more day not rebranding.

With gratitude,

Joe
